Poker Game Types

The most popular poker variants can be divided into three groups:
  • Community Card Poker
  • Stud Poker
  • Draw Poker

Community Card Poker

Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold'em is the most played poker variant in casinos. Each player may use any combination of the five community cards and their own two hole cards to make a poker hand. The game is divided into a series of hands or deals, at the conclusion of each hand the pot is awarded to one or a few players. A hand ends either at the showdown (when the remaining players compare their hands), or when all but one player have folded and abandoned their claim to the pot. The pot is then awarded to the player(s) who have not folded and have the best hand.

The objective of winning players is not winning every individual hand, but rather making mathematically correct decisions. By making such decisions, winning poker players maximize their long run winnings, which is achieved by maximizing their expected utility on each round of betting.

Stud Poker

Seven-card Stud

Seven-card Stud was once the most popular poker variant in home games across the United States, until the recent increase in popularity of Texas Hold'em. It is a stud poker variant that can be played starting from two up to eight players.

Each player is dealt two cards face down and one card face up. After the first betting round another upcard is dealt to each player, followed by another betting round. The second round is followed by a third upcard and betting round, a fourth upcard and betting round, and finally a fifth downcard and betting round and showdown if necessary.

Five-card Stud

Each player is dealt one card face down, followed by one card face up. After the first betting round another upcard is dealt to each player, followed by the second betting round, a third upcard, the fourth betting round, a fourth upcard, the fifth betting round and eventually the showdown (which is rare).

Caribbean Stud

Caribbean stud poker is a casino table game with rules similar to five card stud poker. However, unlike standard poker games, Caribbean stud is played against the house rather than against other players (and, like most such games, it cannot be beaten in the long run).

Draw Poker

Draw poker is any poker variant in which each player is dealt a complete hand before the first betting round, and then develops the hand for later rounds by replacing or drawing cards. While losing popularity in casino's, it is still very common in home games.
